AliasZoo is the quickest and easiest way to get control over the mountain of Alias files living on your Hard Drive. This version of AliasZoo adds AppleGuide Support, and makes registering AliasZoo much, much easier.
________________________________________________
Changes In Version 2.0.8
(1) Added the Register application to the archive. Using this program makes registering AliasZoo much, much easier than before. You may now pay for AliasZoo using a credit card.
Changes In Version 2.0.7
(1) Fixed a bug that caused AliasZoo to lock up if it was launched in the background. This occurred most often when sending AppleEvents to AliasZoo when it was not yet running.
(2) Fixed the position of the version number in the splash screen.
(3) Added Apple Guide Support.
(4) When AliasZoo is launched in the background it will not display the splash screen. This makes it quicker when using things like AppleScript.
(5) Updated Blue Globe Software's contact information.
For a complete description of how AliasZoo works see the 'AliasZoo Help' item under the Help menu when AliasZoo is running (the help file can be saved as a TeachText document for later reference). Please note that AliasZoo REQUIRES System 7 (otherwise there would be no Aliases to look at) - sorry System 6 users.
••• NOTE for PowerTalk users •••
If you are using AliasZoo with a non-english version of PowerTalk please read the document titled "Modifying AliasZoo" that came with this package.

Before You Start
If you haven't rebuilt your desktop file(s) lately, I suggest you do so before first using AliasZoo. The desktop file is used extensively by all of AliasZoo's features and things will work best if it's completely up to date. If you don't know how to rebuild your desktop file, check the manuals that came with your Macintosh. Besides, rebuilding your desktop file regularily (I rebuild mine every couple of months) is a good way to keep your System software happy.
AliasZoo is being distributed by Blue Globe Software as shareware. You have 30 days to try AliasZoo, after which, if you choose to keep it, you MUST register your copy.

Registering AliasZoo
AliasZoo has the following pricing:
1-10 single user licenses, $15 per user.
11+ single user licenses, $10 per user.
A Site license costs $150 (equal to 15 users) and covers all locations for your organization within an 80 kilometer radius of your site (50 miles). One big advantage of a site license is that you do not need to keep track of how many people at your site are using AliasZoo. A World-Wide License costs $600 and it covers all locations for your organization on the planet earth.
Paying for AliasZoo is fairly simple. Open the Register program that accompanies AliasZoo. If this application is missing, you can obtain a copy from our web site at <http://www.blueglobe.com/~cliffmcc/MacSoftware.html>.
In the Register program, enter your name, your email address, and the number of single user licenses you desire (or Site or Word-Wide licenses). Save or Copy or Print the data from the Register program and send the data and payment to Kagi Shareware. More specifics on the Register program to follow. Kagi Shareware handles my payment processing.
If paying with Credit Card or First Virtual, you can email or fax the data to Kagi Shareware. Their email address is <shareware@kagi.com> and their fax number is +1 510 652-6589. You can either Copy the data from Register and paste it into the body of an email message or you can Save the data to a file and you can attach that file to an email message. There is no need to compress the data file, it's already pretty small. If you have a fax modem, just Print the data to the Kagi fax number.
Payments sent via email are processed within 3 to 4 days. You will receive an email acknowledgement when it is processed. Payments sent via fax take up to 10 days and if you provide a correct internet email address you will receive an email acknowledgement.
If you are paying with Cash or USD Check you should print the data using the Register application and send it to the address shown on the form, which is:
Kagi Shareware
1442-A Walnut Street #392-CI
Berkeley, California 94709-1405
USA
(That last part of line 2 is '#392' followed by a 'C' as in Charlie, and an 'I' as in Isabel)
You can pay with a wide variety of cash from different countries but at present if you pay via check, it must be a check drawn in US Dollars. Kagi Shareware cannot accept checks in other currencies, the conversion rate for non-USD checks is around USD 15 per check and that is just not practical.
If you have a purchasing department, you can enter all the data into the Register program and then select Invoice as your payment method. Print three copies of the form and send it to your accounts payable people. You might want to highlight the line that mentions that they must include a copy of the form with their payment.
Kagi Shareware can not invoice your company, so you'll need to act on my behalf and generate the invoice and handle all the paperwork on your end.
Please do not fax or email payment forms that indicate Cash, Check or Invoice as the payment method. As far as we know, there is still no technology to transfer physical objects via fax or email and without the payment, the form cannot be processed.
Payments sent via postal mail take time to reach Kagi Shareware and then up to 10 days for processing. Again, if you include a correct email address, you will hear from Kagi Shareware when the form is processed.
You can also pay your AliasZoo shareware fee through CompuServe's ShareWare registry, but it costs $20, per single-user copy, if you register this way (see CompuServe for more information on the registry). AliasZoo's shareware registry number is #125.
Using AliasZoo after the 30 day period without
registering is ILLEGAL (not to mention highly
dishonest). Don't assist in the destruction of
the shareware ideal: Pay for the software that
you use. (I'll now get off my little soap-box).

The (not so) Small Print
ALIASZOO COMES WITH ABSOLUTELY NO GUARANTEES OF ANY KIND. IF ALIASZOO DOES ANYTHING YOU DO NOT LIKE, OR YOU THINK IT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LOST DATA, OR LOST TIME, OR LOST PROFITS, OR YOUR LOST DOG, OR ANYTHING ELSE YOU MIGHT WANT TO BLAME IT FOR, THAT'S SOMETHING YOU TAKE THE FULL RISK FOR BEFORE USING ALIASZOO. BY USING ALIASZOO YOU AGREE THAT YOU WILL NOT HOLD BLUEGLOBE SOFTWARE, OR ANY OF ITS EMPLOYEES, RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE OR LOSSES OR ANY OTHER UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCES YOU MAY HAVE WHILE USING ALIASZOO.
Although I personally don't think you'll have any problems, some confused people out there are so litigation happy, that anyone who tries to release any software needs to protect themselves with silly statements like the one above.
Thanks for your support of AliasZoo! I'm sure you'll find it's the easiest, and most powerful, Alias utility you've ever used.

Addendum
• Though not listed in the help file there is an important aspect about AliasZoo that you should be aware of. If you are scanning a Network volume for aliases, and AliasZoo indicates that some of the alias files do not have owners (indicated by a large red 'X' being placed next to the file) be cautious before deleting them. This concern stems from the fact that network volumes can restrict portions of their contents from your view. As a result, you may be able to 'see' the alias files, but you may not be able to 'see' their owners in some cases. This will cause AliasZoo to tell you that an alias has no owner when, in reality, it does have an owner but you just don't have the access priviledges necessary to view it.
The moral #1: be careful when deleting alias files from network volumes.
• When an alias points to a file on another volume, AliasZoo will automatically mount it so that it can check the target (if you have the appropriate preferences selected). When AliasZoo is finished checking aliases it will unmount these temporary volumes. However, since these volumes are being identified by name only, a volume with the same name as the startup volume may be mounted by AliasZoo, but it cannot be unmounted.
The moral #2: avoid giving two volumes the same name - it not only confuses the Finder, but it'll likely confuse you too (and if your hard drive still has the default name it shipped with, like 'HD500' or 'Mac HD' or whatever, PLEASE change it to something else - every Mac needs a little personality).
• It seems that some people have discovered the 'Easter Egg' I hid in AliasZoo after version 2.0. For those of you who are wondering just where it is, here's a hint: it has to do with the 'Get Info' screen. Play around with key combinations, you'll find it soon enough. <grin>
